Tips for Quadcopters and FPV

Quadcopters can be really tricky to use. All people are faced several problems while building and flying quadcopters. Another chapter which brings even more trouble is FPV piloting. If you don't want to waste your money because you did the same mistakes as I did, you have to read this article.

I will make a list of all the tips, facts and tricks I found so far here:

  • Quadcopters are expensive, with or without FPV
  • What goes up, goes down too!
  • You will crash! This is fact.
  • They take a lot of time to build and learn and a second of time to crash
  • If you buy cheap components, you will crash because of their fault and you will have to rebuild your quad and this time, believe or not, you will buy the best ones
  • ArduCopter or Naza are the controllers you should use
  • Another one that is good is OpenPilot CC3D
  • MultiWii is hard to tune but good if you wan't to have 100% over your quadcopter
  • Don't fly if its windy or really cold (-10°). In cold conditions, sensors don't work as they should and you wil crash
  • Don't try to fly if you bent the antenna on your transmitter
  • Use circualar polarized antennas for 5.8GHz in most of cases, with linear you get bigger range but more noise. You can use them only in big open areas
  • If you want to make videos with your quadcopter, buy GoPro and mount it on the gimbal. Otherwise, your videos will never get close to the quality of videos found on YouTube
  • Another option is to fly with big expos and mount GoPro on memory foam
  • To edit your videos, use Sony Vegas or Adobe Premiere if you wish to have satisfying video quality results
  • For short range and lower price, use 5G8 FPV video RX/TX set, for long range use 2,4GHz
  • Never use Video downlink with frequency lower than your radio frequency as it will interfere the signal
  • Great radio link for long range FPV is 2,4GHz with WiFi booser or UHF set like DragonLink
  • Smaller quads fly faster and are good for fun, but for aerial videos, go for bigger quads or even octas
  • Don't fly over people heads, never! You can hurt or even kill people by doing this!
  • Don't fly near airports
  • Check if FPV or even normal quads without downlink are legal in your country
  • Make sure you don't break into anyones privacy by filming them without their permission
  • Optimal setup is 1:2 frame : battery
  • Never fly without a spotter - a person who doesn't wear video googles and has direct line-of-sight contact with your drone

NOTE: I will update this list periodicaly - as soon as I get idea for new one. Stay tuned!
